Hamal From C (Chiharu)

Hamal from c (Chiharu) is a self-taught artist currently residing in Kyoto, Japan. She says, “My father is a potter, and because of his influence, I’ve been interested in painting since I was three years old. I first travelled abroad when I was 23 years old, and I visited Hawaii, Italy and Australia. There, I experienced the sophisticated expression of art through various cultures and learned of the kindness of people and the beauty of nature.”

She loves the ocean, and her drawings are often inspired by the sea and surfing culture. The theme of her artwork series is A Journey Story of a Surfer Girl. Famed surfer, Sara Wakita, a participant in the 2020 Olympic Games has worn a pair of shoes she has customised. “You can be the other girl in my picture. That’s the most fascinating point. When you look at my pictures, I want you to enter my world and have fun with the surfer girls who love beaches. I think it is my role to deliver the sights I see during my trips. I would like to convey the importance of receiving energy emanating from the surfer girl, loving nature, and having confidence as one who lives on earth.”

In 2018 Hamal from c (Chiharu) was commissioned to produce wall art for the container at R Cafe, the Hawaiian cafe in Shiga prefecture. She also created the banner design for the BIWAKO×SUP×YOGA event and hosted a popup held at Kyoto SHIN TERRACE & HOSTEL KYOTO. 2021 sees her participating in a group exhibition a gallery in Los Angeles, California.

“My dream is to one day have my own exhibition in foreign countries and meet many people with whom to showcase my own art.”
